INTRODUCTION

INTRO
Vault 113

You wake feeling groggy. You have the distinct sense of oversleeping, even if you may not recall ever going to bed in the first place. And this bed? Definitely not yours, no matter how comfortable it may be. And you'd probably not go to sleep in your street clothes*, right? Well, maybe it's time to smooth out your bedhead and get exploring!

(*or whatever else you were wearing at the last moment you remember)

The first thing you'll notice is the complete absence of windows - are you underground? Though you'll encounter quite a few closed doors, there are some rooms for you to look through and maybe catch your breath in. Maybe it's time for a slushie in the dining room? Impatience won't get you anywhere!

And what's better than a sweet drink to bring strangers together? After all, you're not the only one who's crawled out of bed a little late today. Mingle and don't worry too hard about your current predicament!

((The Mastermind will introduce themselves at 7pm EST real time.))

....

[Grimmer waits patiently for a long moment, before realizing that Sigma seems a bit locked up. So he holds out his hand.]

I'm Wolfgang Grimmer. You?

[ sigma stares at the outstretched hand with apprehension, still silent. it's not often that he's shaking people's hands, so it takes a second for him to remember that the correct response to this is to take their hand and shake it.

he does so, but it's possible that the motion is mechanical, as if shaking a robot's hand. ]

Sigma. [ his tone is clipped, as if still cautious. ] That's my only name.

[If Grimmer finds it odd or even notices it, he doesn't show it.]

Well then, Sigma, let me ask you something. Why do you think the people that put us here made the rules they did?

[ that is a fantastic question, actually. sigma knits his brows together in thought, recalling the rules that were displayed to them earlier.

when he starts speaking, he does so dispassionately, although taking the time to sit down in front of grimmer. ]

Rules one and two are meant to demoralize our group. Rule three... I'm not sure what rule 3 is about. Maybe it's to avoid a lawsuit, though I don't know if anyone here is a lawyer. [ so maybe that one doesn't matter? ] Rule four and six... imply that they're both possible and within our means, but I don't think we should be jumping to do either. Maybe that machine doesn't work properly, or Ianthe will come back to life after some time...and I imagine she wouldn't be in a good mood after getting killed.

[ getting killed is absolutely on sigma's 'would not enjoy' list, so he wouldn't be surprised if it were in ianthe's. ]

As for rule five, I guess it's to make sure that the game isn't over too quickly. It'd be bad for the game if someone went and slaughtered all of us in one go.

Given Ianthe materialized out of a pool of blood, I think killing her is definitely easier said than done, yes.
[She's some sort of flesh wizard. Scary!!]

I think what you've observed about rule five is telling. For some reason, they want to prevent this from ending too quickly. The question is why. They're calling this a game, but really it's an experiment, don't you think?

To some people, an experiment can very much be a game. My boss is like that, for example.

[ far, far away, francesca prelati sneezes. ]

[Yikes!]

Well, either way, the question is what are they looking to get out of it.

[personal profile] namelesslancer 2023-04-10 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Data, most likely.

[ plain and simple. ]

I imagine she would repeat this again as many times as they need to. To get more results.

Data about what? That people will resort to murder when put under enough stress? There's centuries of evidence of that already.
namelesslancer: (11)

[personal profile] namelesslancer 2023-04-10 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Then what do you think they need us for? If they wanted our bodies, then they could have killed us upon kidnapping us.

I think it's more complicated than just murder. They could be testing to see how people react to long term confinement, it could be about the lack of sunlight, or they could have a variety of stimuli they're going to apply to people individually, and this choice of location is to control for other variables.

[ sigma thinks. it'd be so much easier if he had watcher to help guide him, but clearly he has to come to these conclusions on his own.

after a couple seconds, he nods. ]

Perhaps. This is likely a place that's so secluded that, even if we did manage to break out, there won't be any civilization surrounding us.

Mm. The design around here makes me think of America, and there's a lot of desert out west in the US, isn't there?

[the vault is in snowfield actually.]
