You wake feeling groggy. You have the distinct sense of oversleeping, even if you may not recall ever going to bed in the first place. And this bed? Definitely not yours, no matter how comfortable it may be. And you'd probably not go to sleep in your street clothes*, right? Well, maybe it's time to smooth out your bedhead and get exploring!

(*or whatever else you were wearing at the last moment you remember)

The first thing you'll notice is the complete absence of windows - are you underground? Though you'll encounter quite a few closed doors, there are some rooms for you to look through and maybe catch your breath in. Maybe it's time for a slushie in the dining room? Impatience won't get you anywhere!

And what's better than a sweet drink to bring strangers together? After all, you're not the only one who's crawled out of bed a little late today. Mingle and don't worry too hard about your current predicament!

[ YOR ISN'T so she sounds impressed as she comes over to take a nearby chair, assuming she isn't waved off. ]

[ Ruby does not wave her off, and it has nothing to do with the fact that Yor seems both nice and nice-looking. ]

A little. It's a hobby. [ she's being a little modest here. ] I mess around with Pale-compression frequencies and equipment, from time to time.

[bethorns]

[ OH NO SHE'S ALREADY LOST ]

Pale...compression...?

Yeah. To make the Pale smaller, so that it's easier for people to travel across it.

[ Ruby doesn't bother explaining what the Pale is. Not knowing about the Pale would be like not knowing about the ocean, or dirt. ]

[ Okay, now that's worrying. Ruby leans in a little closer, to see if there's something obviously wrong with this woman. But she seems fine. ]

...No? Nobody lives in the Pale. It's like...pure nothing. If anything, it separates countries.

Are you okay? Did you forget other things when you woke up?

[bethorns]

I don't believe I forgot anything? I've just never heard of the "Pale".

[ She's still 100% unclear on what that is... ]

[theinstigator]

[ it's okay Yor, the Pale kind of isn't anything. It's also very important. ]

That's... [ Ruby's not going to say impossible, because that would be mean, but she is genuinely concerned. ] ...fine. Don't worry about it. Wherever we are, I think we're too far below it.

[bethorns]

Oh, okay! [ Yor proceeds to not worry about it. She doesn't understand it so GOODBYE, PALE, WHATEVER YOU MIGHT BE - ]

[ the way she just brushes that off, like it's no big deal....... what would it be like to a live a life that free of anxiety? Ruby continues to be concerned, but also a little jealous. ]

Ruby. Nice to meet you. [ she actually means it. ] Sorry it's under shitty circumstances.

[bethorns]

[ To live that kind of life you just gotta be head empty...Yor never really experienced anxiety even when she was a kid raising her kid brother after their parents died and learning assassination to pay the bills. She just...kind of went through life with a smile. Possibly terrifying when you think about it, but... ]

It's nice to meet you, too! No need to apologize, though? I mean, we didn't set out to meet like this.

[theinstigator]

[ Ruby laughs a little, and then stops, as if surprising herself. ]

No, this is the last place I wanna be. You're right. And I just got out of this underground setup, too. [ she shrugs. ] So it goes.

[bethorns]

I've never been stuck underground before, myself...I can't say I like it!

[ But, you know, it could be worse. ]

The company isn't bad!

[theinstigator]

[ boy this woman is really throwing Ruby for a loop! ]

Not ideal, usually? Mostly an emergencies thing. But I'm glad you're making the best of it. That's good.

[bethorns]

[ It's the head empty skill ]

Well, I think it should be okay! [ ...baselessly. ]

[theinstigator]

[ Ruby's voice softens, and her expression gets a little wistful, despite her dignity and better judgment. ]

Yeah. I hope it is.

[bethorns]

You too, Ruby! We should definitely work together.

[ TO DO whatever they are doing. Yor just assumes things will work out... ]

[theinstigator]

[ Ruby actually smiles at that, but it's a little sad, a little distant. ]

We should. I think that'd be -- [ to use Yor's words: ] -- fun.

[bethorns]
